What Is the Dry Skin Cycle?
The Cycle of Dry Skin is a degenerative cycle that begins when environmental factors, primarily low humidity, cause the skin to become dehydrated. This compromises the skin’s moisture barrier and creates a disruption in the delicate arrangement of lipids between the cells of the epidermis. This, in turn, leads to a loss of natural moisturizing factors, a specific group of amino acids that act as internal humectants within stratum corneum cell (The outermost layer of the epidermis which is made of dead, flat skin cells that shed about every 2 weeks)
Once the moisture barrier is disrupted, the skin begins to dehydrate even faster. A frenzy of skin cell overproduction takes place in an effort to compensate for the disrupted barrier. Meanwhile, the skin’s natural renewal process (exfoliation) slows. The result is a thickening of the skin as old cells accumulate on top of one another, forming the brittle, flaking layer we know as dry skin.

Preventing Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is the most prevalent of all cancers. It is estimated that more than one million Americans develop skin cancer every year. Basically, there are two types of skin cancer: non-melanoma and melanoma. Non-melanoma when found early and treated properly, have a cure rate of over 95%. Melanoma, the most deadly of all skin cancers and the seventh leading cause of death in North America, is also curable when detected in its early stages.
Over exposure to the sun's rays is the main cause of skin cancer, especially when it results in blistering sunburn. It is important to apply appropriate sun protection including a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunblock with an SPF 15 or more, every two hours when doing outdoors activities and sweating. Also, wearing appropriate clothing (tight weave, dark colors, natural fabrics, 6" rim hats, etc.) and broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunglasses, along with seeking protective shelter during the midday sun, can help prevent skin cancer.
Periodic self-examinations can aid in early detection. Most of the spots on your skin – freckles, birthmarks, and moles - are normal, but some may be skin cancer.
What is the difference between UVA and UVB rays?
UVB rays are more associated with burning on the skin and cause skin thickening, age spots and may cause skin cancer while UVA rays are more associated with the aging effects of UV light and also sun sensitization.
They are both are believed to be responsible for premature skin aging
UVB Rays
Daily sun protection should be practiced regardless of one's skin type. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests that, regardless of skin type, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 should be used year-round.
Sunscreen and FDA
Unfortunately, sunscreen agents approved for use by the FDA include several synthetic chemicals. Unlike mineral sunscreens that reflect light, synthetic sunscreen agents work by absorbing energy from ultraviolet light. Synthetic sunscreen agents do not offer immediate sun protection and must be applied 30 minutes to 2 hours before sun exposure. Many of these synthetic chemicals have been shown to be irritating and allergenic. Synthetic sunscreen agents penetrate the skin and may enter the bloodstream. Some even cause photosensitivity, an increased susceptibility to sunburn.

The causes of acne
Acne is a skin condition caused by overactivity of the glands that secrete oily substances on to the skin. The blackheads and spots usually occur on the face, where the greatest number of these oil-producing "sebaceous" glands exist. The back, chest and shoulders can also be affected.
How does Acne forms?
When there is an excess of sebum, the area around a hair follicle and the opening through the skin – the pore – can become clogged. A bug, a bacterium called Propionobacterium acnes, that lives normally on the skin , can thrive within the blocked pore. This infection causes inflammation, which is responsible for the redness and swelling of a spot. Sometimes as in severe acne, the pocket of inflammation within a pore can rupture, causing damage to the skin that can result in scarring.
